Alberto Ramirez retired on 2015 as Director of Learning Technologies at the Center for Distributed Learning in Frederick Community College in Frederick, MD, after sixteen years of providing support to faculty in the development of online courses, application of emerging technologies to learning practices across the curriculum, and distance learning. He taught courses in technology, critical thinking, and oceanography. Alberto Ramirez earned a Master’s Degree in Biological Oceanography from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California San Diego, and completed graduate coursework on fisheries oceanography at the University of Miami in Miami, Florida. He worked for 10 years on oceanographic research and graduate education in the tropical Pacific and Caribbean while based at the University of Mexico’s Mazatlan Research Station. For six years he served as Consulting Regional Expert with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission. As Science and Technology Coordinator at the Museum of Science in Miami, Florida, he also taught Oceanography, Geography, Environmental Science, and Critical Thinking at Barry University in Miami Shores, and at Miami-Dade Community College. As Director of Public Programs for the Columbus Center Hall of Exploration in Baltimore, MD, Mr. Ramirez planned, designed and implemented public programs in marine biotechnology, through advanced multimedia and interactive applications, as well as hands-on laboratory learning experiences.
